How PVC Resin Properties Affect the Quality of PVC Profiles?

Time : 2026-09-01

Abstract:The quality of finished PVC profiles fundamentally relies on base PVC resin. Indicators including polymerization degree, particle morphology and thermal stability greatly affect processing, appearance, mechanical strength and outdoor weather resistance. This article analyzes the impacts of PVC resin characteristics and offers references for profile formulation development.

PVC resin serves as the core raw material for PVC profiles, including plastic window & door profiles, pipes, sheets and other products. Its inherent properties directly determine the mechanical performance, processability and final quality of finished profiles. The main influences are shown in four aspects:

1.Hardness and Mechanical Properties of Profiles:

Degree of polymerization (molecular weight and its distribution) is a critical indicator, with common grades such as SG-4, SG-5 and SG-6. High polymerization resin like SG-4 has long molecular chains with excellent tensile strength and hardness, ideal for rigid profiles such as pipes and window profiles. Low polymerization grades (SG-1, SG-2), compounded with plenty of plasticizers, are widely used for flexible products. Resin with narrow molecular weight distribution delivers stable mechanical performance and better impact resistance. Higher regularity of molecular structure brings stronger crystallization tendency, improving heat distortion resistance and aging resistance of profiles.

2.Processability and Surface Quality:

Particle size and porosity classify PVC resin. Porous-type PVC features fluffy particles, large specific surface area and high porosity. It has good oil absorption capacity, fast plasticization and high surface gloss of finished products, which is preferred for profile extrusion. Dense-type PVC is harder to plasticize. Fine and uniform resin particles achieve better plasticization under heat and shear, reducing fisheye defects. PVC tends to decompose and release hydrogen chloride under heat. The intrinsic thermal stability of PVC resin defines the processing temperature window, affecting defects such as yellowing and black streaks, and relating to rejection rate and surface gloss.

3.Weld Strength and Dimensional Stability:

Melt flow property affects filling during extrusion. Resin with moderate molecular weight has favorable melt fluidity and uniform plasticization, improving weld strength of window profiles and ensuring stable dimensions. Excessively high molecular weight leads to poor melt flow, raising processing difficulty and weakening weld strength.

4.Weather Resistance and Service Life:

Whiteness and color stability determine the visual performance of profiles. Resin with insufficient whiteness or tendency of yellowing shortens the outdoor service life and reduces market acceptance.

In summary, the formulation design of PVC profiles (combination of stabilizers, plasticizers, fillers and other additives) should match the inherent characteristics of PVC resin, to reach the optimal balance among mechanical property, processability, appearance and weathering lifespan.
